The Mouldy, Stinky, Stapled Solution

05-12-2017

It  stinks! It's mouldy! Its packaging is stapled together...and we want you to develop a programme that inspects it for quality and contamination before it reaches customers?!

Not your typical premium product brief.

In case you hadn't guessed, the product in question is Camembert. The 'bake in its box' cheesey treat so beloved in these colder months.

Our client, one of France's premier Camembert producers, required a sophisticated inspection solution that reviewed the fully packaged product (in a staple-held wooden box, as most traditional Camembert should be!) for contaminants, without being compromised by the metal staples.

Whilst more contemporary packaging types are now available for this cheese, a true French Camembert would never be seen in anything other than the traditional Poplar wooden box (it's widely held that Camembert sold in metal tins cannot be found on any French market).

Hardly surprising when the box offers not only a premium appeal, but also a useful cooking utensil for the product!

I digress, back to the solution of inspecting Camembert.
We are x-ray inspection evangelists for more reasons than simply bias.

The limitations of metal detectors are well known, but in this instance the key issues preventing its use are:

  • Polar molecules (those found in high fat content such as cheese).
  • Metal from the staples within the packaging.
Both would have prevented any type of metal detection inspection.

Our Sapphire x-ray insepction solution was uninhibited by these features and had the advantage of providing a final mass-check prior to shipping as an added feature to this superior inspection style.

You can request the white paper detailing our Camambert adventure (ok, it's more an algorithm than an adventure) here.

P.S. If we've whetted your appetite, here's one of our favourite Camembert recipes!
